Asian Games: Rishabh Das finishes sixth in 100m backstroke; India face Singapore in TT -- Asian Games 2026 Live Updates: Elavenil Valarivan produced a memorable opening day for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, adding an individual silver in the women's 10m air rifle to the team silver she had won earlier today.

The 2025 world championship bronze medallist finished with 252.4 points in the individual final, narrowly missing out on gold to Japan's Hinata Taichi. The Japanese shooter prevailed with 253.0 points, setting a new Asian Games record, while South Korea's Hyojin Ban secured bronze with 230.4.

Elavenil was in contention for the top spot until the closing moments. She entered the final two shots only 0.3 points behind Taichi and remained within striking distance after recording 10.4 to Taichi's 10.6, which increased the deficit to 0.5.

With gold still within reach, Elavenil needed a stronger final shot but could manage 10.1. Taichi responded with 10.2 to hold on to the lead and complete a record-breaking gold-medal performance.

Earlier in the day, Elavenil had teamed up with Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod to win silver in the women's 10m air rifle team event. Her two medals account for both of India's shooting medals so far at the Games.

The performance also offers an early boost to India's shooting campaign after the country produced a record haul of 22 medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022 — seven gold, nine silver and six bronze.

India have also been assured of another medal through Suchika Tariyal, who advanced to the semifinals of the women's Traditional MMA 60kg event.

Iran says Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until its conditions are met -- Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US-Iran war enters its seventh month, with fresh claims from Tehran about American military losses and growing scrutiny over the cost of the conflict. Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the US must accept a new reality in which its fighter jets can be targeted.

Referring to a US Lead Inspector General report on American aircraft damaged or destroyed during combat operations against Iran, Ghalibaf wrote on X: "The era when your F-35s and F-15s get hunted down and you have to report them damaged has already begun." He added: "What was once pure nightmare fuel is now the daily reality. Live with it."

The remarks came as the Washington Post reported that the US military's publicly disclosed death toll may not reflect the full number of American fatalities. Citing six US officials familiar with internal casualty data, it said at least 22 US service members had died, four more than the Pentagon's public tally.

The wider conflict has also created significant pressure on US military resources and regional security. A recent US watchdog report cited damage to American bases and aircraft, losses of drones and shortages of advanced munitions.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to exert pressure around the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting oil shipments and contributing to higher global energy prices, while its Houthi allies have increased pressure around the Red Sea.
