Daily Mail - Business

The bond market sank Liz Truss and now our new Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey face sky-high yields ahead of their first crunch Budget. Unlike their crime-fighting namesakes, bond vigilantes punish governments they regard as fiscally irresponsible but the UK is in a tight spot, due to high spending and taxes.

In 1970, Tony Jacklin CBE became the first European golfer in 45 years to win the US Open, a year after clinching The Open at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. Four decades would pass before another European lifted the US Open trophy. During this period, Tony, now 82, achieved a remarkable brace over the dominant Americans, starting in 1985 when he captained Europe to its first Ryder Cup victory in 28 years. His team replicated this victory in Ohio two years later, winning their first Ryder Cup on American soil.

The Defender Wolf Series II is being touted as the ideal successor to the emblematic Land Rover Series I, better known by generations of soldiers simply as the 'Landy'. In March, then defence minister Luke Pollard said the 'iconic British vehicle' had 'served us incredibly well' but announced it was time for a replacement with 'something with greater capability' as he confirmed the legendary 4X4s retirement from service. With the world's biggest motoring and defence giants from across the globe presenting their rugged vehicles to fulfill the 6,000 fleet, Jaguar Land Rover has thrown its hat in the ring with its latest military-grade model based on the current Defender 4X4.

The government bond market is freaking out again, so should you be worried? On the surface the answer is 'no'. The periodic throwing of toys out of the bond market pram is usually a storm that long-term thinkers can ignore. But take a deeper look and you'll find we should all be worried about what's going on with government bonds, because this is making our lives worse in terms of public services and tax.

In March, me and my wife travelled from our home in Scotland to the Isle of Man, to provide support to my sister-in-law who has cancer. When we arrived at the airport to fly home, our flight was delayed for two and a half hours and then cancelled. There wasn't another flight to Edinburgh for two days, so we accepted Loganair's offer of a replacement flight to Birmingham. The airline said onward transport from Birmingham to Edinburgh would be provided - but it wasn't.

While it looks almost indistinguishable from the combustion-engined Range Rover, it is underpinned by an 800-volt architecture, industry-leading battery technology and two powerful electric motors. The result? Performance to match the V8 petrol Rangie, including the same 900mm wading depth and off-road capability, but with even greater refinement and well over 300 mile of real-world driving range. Daily Mail and This is Money motoring editor Rob Hull spent a brief spell at the wheel of a prototype to get an early impression of what a battery-powered Range Rover really feels like.

An issue for John Healey to deal with when he returns from the divisive summit of G20 economic powers in North Carolina is Britain's high-cost bond yields. If the Chancellor could bring the interest rate bill of £135bn or so on the UK's £3 trillion of national debt down, he might be able to fund the defence budget without piling on growth destroying wealth and bank taxes.

They say age ain't nothing but a number, but when it comes to later-life financial planning it can be a bit of a headache - especially if you reach retirement at a different time to your partner. According to Census figures from the Office for National Statistics, nearly a third of married opposite-sex couples have an age gap of five years or more with the equivalent figure for those cohabiting being just short of 34 per cent. In 68 per cent of married couples, the man is the older partner.

Months after his death my mum has had no correspondence from Capita with regards to her spouse's pension although they returned the death certificate in December. What was presumably a simple task (take my dad's pension figure, halve it, and there you have my mum's pension figure) has now become much more complicated. There will now also be arrears and I assume interest and possibly compensation to calculate. There will also be the tax implications of income bunching to consider. For my 81-year-old mum it is all just too much.
