The Government plans to let older people off paying income tax if their 'only income is the full new or basic state pension without any increments' - but details are still pending. Former Pensions Minister Steve Webb says: 'The uncertainty about the proposed "tax waiver" on state pensions makes it difficult for people deciding now whether or not to defer taking their state pension.' A This is Money reader contacted us to say he believes he will be penalised in future compared with those who didn't delay, because he already deferred in 2020-21 and so gets £11.48 a week extra state pension.

We run a family farm and have had a British Gas account for six years, paying about £200 a month for electricity. Last month the company sent a bill for £19,700 and took the money from our account via direct debit. It turned out a meter reader sent by British Gas in May had read it incorrectly. As soon as the money left our account, I made contact and the company admitted its mistake.

This included including fuel pumps, starter motors and air-conditioning compressors, all of which were excluded beyond three years or 40,000 miles in the policy small print.

London's ultra-rich are forking out as much as £40,000 a week for rental properties in the capital as steep stamp duty bills and fears of more punitive property taxes in the Autumn Budget put many off buying. Trevor Abrahamson, boss of estate agent Glentree, said fear of higher levies was fuelling the rise of exorbitant rents, adding: 'We are agreeing deals on apartments and houses at £17,000 to £40,000 a week.' 'Many would rather own a home, but overseas buyers face stamp duty rates of as high as 19 per cent.'
